Hesed Project

Hesed is the kind of deep, unshakeable love that God shows everyone.

Chesed (Hebrew: חֶסֶד, also Romanized: Hesed) is a Hebrew word that means ‘kindness of love between people’, specifically of the devotional piety of people towards God as well as of love or the mercy of God towards humanity.

Our purpose

Hesed Project provides a place to explore questions about faith and human sexuality, find reliable resources for your own journey of unlearning, and make connections with others on a similar journey.

Hesed Project's story

Hesed Project grew out of a need within one faith community, the Christian Reformed Church of North America (CRCNA), during a time when it was making decisions about its teaching and practices on human sexuality.

The need, common to many churches, was to hear the stories of persons who did not fit the typical stereotypes of sexual identity and relationships, and to have access to alternative resources for those with questions about traditional teachings and practices.

Through three years of awareness-raising and advocacy within the CRCNA, from 2022 – 2025, the Hesed network grew, but the CRCNA decided to close the door to full respect and full participation in its churches.

Hesed Project now sees its role as continuing to support and expand the network of people and groups who are committed to full inclusion, whatever their status as members of local non-affirming or affirming churches and churches within different denominations and networks who share a common goal for LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Our Goals

We facilitate connections between parents of LGBTQ+ children for mutual support and connections between church members and leaders who want to contribute to developing faith communities where LGBTQ+ persons are full participants.
